A Compensation Tale: A Law Firm Pivots for the Next Generation

Your Host, Gary Allen

Gary Allen was only two years out of Stanford Law School when the firm he was working for imploded. It happened again four years later. He was left without a job. Those experiences created a passion in Gary to help law firms be better businesses, with efficient operations, streamlined financial management, and a laser focus on profitability. Gary recently retired from practicing law after 30 years as a partner at Givens Pursley, a 40-lawyer firm in Boise, Idaho. He is the founder of LeanLaw, a legal billing software company.

A Compensation Tale: A Law Firm Pivots for the Next Generation

When Nelson & Nelson’s founder, Horace Nelson, narrowly survives a climbing accident in Patagonia, he stuns his firm by announcing his immediate retirement. For decades, Horace enforced an outdated lockstep compensation system in the fictional law firm. His sudden exit creates both a leadership vacuum and a rare chance to reset. In this webinar, Alice McCarthy, the firm’s legal administrator, and Atticus Nelson, Horace’s son and presumptive successor, meet with Gary Allen (LeanLaw) and Josh Kalish (Firms of the Future) to weigh new models. Through role-play and live audience input, the session explores how different systems—from lockstep to eat-what-you-kill—shape fairness, profitability, culture, and retention.
